Cullompton Rangers 2008-2009

Cully continued there good start to the season with a 4-0 win over the University of Exeter.
A great start to the season with 3 straight wins and a total of 18 goals scored. The performance on Sunday was the best I have seen for a very long time. Phil will have a very difficult choice to make when he has a full squad avaliable. We must not get carried away though there is a very long way to go. The big test will be on 28 September when we take on Frome in the FA Cup
Cully scored another 8 goals, this time keeping a clean sheet too, winning 8-0 versus league newcomers Stoke Lane Athletic. 5-0 at half time meant that Bill had to pay up as he'd promised drinks all round if the girls scored 5 for the 3rd week on the trot, another 3 in the second half were certainly not unwelcome!
Cully scored another 5, this time versus Taunton town. The final score of 5-1 gave Cully another 3 valuable league points.
Cully came away eventual winners in a well fought battle against Cheltenham Town. The final score of 3-5 reflected a cracking game in which it was never obvious who would come out on top.
The first pre-season friendly was against Yeovil, who were able to source a pitch in Chard at short notice. This gave both sets of players the opportunity to have a run out. Cully nearly surprised the Yeovil team having the first chance on goal, a break through early on seeing a ball through to Pope who shot just wide. As the game wore on Yeovil showed that they have stepped up their game since being promoted and out played the Cully girls, showing some great attacking football. If it wasn't for Emma Mingo in goal they would have been a long way ahead by half time. However, she was powerless to stop three great strikes as the half came to a close, one a stunning 35 yard shot. The second half saw Cully put up a stronger fight, and Yeovil only added one more to their scoreline. Cully were unlucky not to capitalise on their attacking play as the skills and pace of Rachel Javan and Lola Sanchez troubled the Yeovil defence. The final score of 4-0 was a fair reflection of the game.
Thursday saw a strong Alphington team visit Cullompton, however minus a goalkeeper...so Max's semi-retirement didn't last long as she donned the gloves for the away team. It was Max who was the busier of the keepers in the first 20 mins, with good attacking play from Lola and Angie Pope. Max denied the strikers their early opportunities but was unable to stop Lolas left footed shot after 20 mins. Alphington responded immediately and a mix-up in defence saw Burwood hit home from 35 yards. Cully regained the lead soon after when Bucky scored direct from a free-kick. Alphington had the last say in the first half as Burwood struck her second to make 2-2 at half time. The second half saw Cully step up their game, keeping Max busy in the Alphington goal. Strikes from Curly, Angie, Lola and Redders made it a comfortable 6-2 scoreline. Alphington never let their heads drop, Mingo denying Burwood her hat trick with a great save. Mandy Earle is still seeking her first Cully goal, coming close but hitting the post with her left footed shot from close range.
Todays third and final pre-season friendly was organised at short notice after Team Weston pulled out yesterday, thankfully Exmouth were able to bring a team to Cully instead. Max again donned the gloves for the opposition, Cully dominated early on but Max was on good form. The speed and youth of Alphington saw them take the lead with a great strike into the top corner of the net. Rachel Javan equalised soon after with a left footed shot and Cully took the lead when Pope scored from a Sanchez corner at close range. The lead was increased when Sanchez shot past Max after a one-two with Jess. Lola turned a defender from an Emma Jones cross to make it 4-1. Pope finished a shot from the left, placing the ball through Max's legs to make it 5-1 and Exmouths determination was rewarded with a second goal. Mingo averted the inital danger however the ball fell to a player on the edge of the box who put it into the back of the net to make the final score 5-2. Max had a cracking game in goal, saving a flick from Mandy Earle and several other good efforts on goal.
The girls start their league campaign on Sunday with a tough game away versus fellow league challengers Cheltenham Town.
The girls have been training for a couple of weeks and the season starts this weekend with a friendly versus Exeter Rangers at Speeds Meadow. Kick off at 2pm, all supporters welcome!!
Gaffer drew level with Bill in the management stakes when his team proved more successful in the North Molton 6 aside tournament today. Gaffers team, Mingos Maulers, went all the way to the final with Bills team, Maxs legends, knocked out in the quarter final stages. A great day was enjoyed by all, and a well organised tournament was blessed with plenty of sunshine. The Maulers were Emma Mingo, Karen Buck, Angie Pope, Emma Jones (snr), Emma ('me julie') Jones (jnr), Becky Maunder and Sam Bell. The Legends were Maxine Coupe, Jess Hooper, Catherine Wright, Mandy Earle, Lola Sanchez, Leanne Griffiths and Kerry Powell-Tuckett. Bill, fresh from his success with his legends in Max's testimonial, was confident and took the Arsene Wenger approach with several 1-0 wins in the early stages. Gaffers team were more daring and scored a hatful of goals, but also made a game of things, going 1-0 down in two successive games.
Bills team were unlucky to go out 1-0 in the quarters, to Bideford. Their Cully counterparts got revenge for them, beating Bideford 3-0 in the semis to progress. Cully lost the final 2-1 to deserved winners Alphington. The top scorer of the day came from an unlikely source, defender Bucky, who enjoyed her 6 aside midfield role finishing freely to the shock of her team mates and manager.
The Cully AGM was held on June 1st with Bill Newcombe being re-elected as chairman, and also taking the role of secretary. Beccy Mitchell and Karen Buck will share the treasurers role for another season. The biggest change to personnel was Maxine Coupe taking the position of joint manager with Phil Tuckett. Everyone is looking forward to next season and hope that the girls will be able to put the disappointments of this season behind them to challenge for the league title.
The annual Cullompton tournament will take place on July 19th and 20th, on the day the girls will be doing a sponsored static cycle aiming to cycle the combined travelling distance to all the teams in the South West Womens Premier League...distance to be confirmed!! Next weekend sees the North Molton tournament in which Cully are entering two teams. Finally, training will start on July 6th at 11am at Cully, all welcome.
The annual dinner was another success, thanks go to the mens team committee for organising it and the caterers for a popular meal. Speeches were well received by the ladies and 3 mens teams with the ladies side putting in a great attendance with 15 players and 7 others involved with the side showing up on the night. Gaffer pulled off a great speech despite having no notes...much to Kerry's dismay! Phil conveyed his thanks to Bill and Beccy for all their hard work behind the scenes. Our congratulations go to the winners on the night: Emma Jones (snr) winning most improved player, Maxine Coupe winning Managers player and Sam Bell taking the coveted players player.
Finally the Gaffer welcomed the new young blood, who will strengthen the squad next season and said a sorry goodbye to Kim Betlam. Understandably travelling from Bournemouth week in week out has taken its toll and Kimmy has decided to play for a more local side next season. We'll all be sorry not to see Kimmy every weekend but wish her well with her new club and hope she continues to come up to Cully for socials in the future.
Two dates for the diary: The AGM will be held on 1st June, 2pm at Speeds Meadow and the North Molton tournament is to be held on June 15th.
Players past and present gathered at Speeds Meadow on Sunday to compete in a testimonial game to honour and celebrate the footballing career of Maxine Coupe.
Cheltenham grabbed second place from Cully in a 7 goal exchange that saw more bad tempers and bad refereeing decisions than good football.
A friendly match has been arranged as a tribute to the long career of Maxine Coupe, between the present Cullompton team and a team comprising of past players of Cullompton, Elmore, Exeter Rangers and others who have played alongside or against Maxine Coupe. If there are any players interested in taking part can they please contact Bill Newcombe on 07711 151828 or 01237 477243. Cully beat Bristol Uni, avenging their defeat earlier in the season and preparing well for the County Cup final on Thursday night
Cully finally conceded their challenge for the title when they went down 2-0 away at Penzance.
Despite a disappointing result on Sunday Cully can still bring the League title to Speeds Meadow. We have three games to go if we win all three we will be champions. It will not be easy but with the players we have we are capable of pulling it off. Let's all get our heads up and show Penzance on Sunday what a really good team we are!!
Cully may still be in with a fighting chance as Cheltenham beat Penzance 4-0 at home today. This result means Cully have dropped 10 points, Penzance and Cheltenham have both dropped 8 points. This means an exciting end to the season with Cully playing both Penzance and Cheltenham away in the coming weeks.
Cully continued their string of disappointing results with a 0-1 defeat by Larkhall. This makes the chances of Cully winning the league title impossible unless other teams also slip up in the final few games of the season.
Despite a disappointing result on Sunday Cully are still very much in the title race. With Penzance losing and facing the long trek to Cheltenham next week a win against Larkhall at Speeds Meadow will keep us in the fight. With away games at Cheltenham on 16 March.a home game against Bristol Uni on 30 March and a trip to Penzance on 6 April(rescedualed from 9 March) the run in is not easy but our fate is in our own hands. With all our players now fit and with the continued vocal encouragement from our supporters Cully have a great chance to bring the title to Speeds Meadow.

Cully beat Exeter Uni 5-1 in last nights evening match. This gives Cully a 3 point lead at the top of the table and a weekend off.
Congratulations on Sunday's great win which sees us top the table. With a home game coming up we have a great chance to go three points clear of Larkhall with a game in hand and six points clear of Penzance who will have two games in hand. There is still a long way to go and there are no prizes for being top in October. I'm sure Phil will keep every one's feet on the ground. I hear there will be some great entertainment lined up for the social evening on Saturday. I will not be able to attend as my youngest daughter is getting married. Have a great time and don't drink too much!!

"Another good win on Sunday. Two league games with 10 goals scored and only 1 conceded and an 8-0 win in the FA Cup what a great start to the season. We continue on Sunday with the visit of Taunton in the FA Cup with the winners receiving £150.We must not get carried away however we still have to meet the likes of Penzance (in the league and if things go to form in the FA Cup] and Gloucester City who are the stronger teams in our League. I'm sure Phil will keep all the players on their toes. See you all on Sunday."
