League v Cheltenham

10th Sept 2006

Cully returned to winning ways with a 0-3 win at Cheltenham Town.

The girls started well determined to make up for last weeks defeat. On a hot afternoon the team passed the ball around, trying to break down the physical Cheltenham midfield and defence. They were rewarded early on when neat passing down the right meant the Cheltenham defence were left at sixes and sevens. Kerry Powell-Tuckett linked up well with Chrissy Daniels, who put a good ball into the box, it was flicked on by Emma Redwood and it found Jess Hooper at the far post, who slotted in a side foot volley.

Cully built on this and kept possession well, again passing the ball around from defence up to attack. The second goal soon followed. Curly (Catherine Wright) won the ball in midfield, switched the ball to Bucky (Karen Buck) on the left. She in turn found Goughy (Laura Gough) on the edge of the box, who controlled the ball closely and cooly chipped the ball over the keeper.

Cully kept the pressure on taking advantage of the slope in the first half, and made it 0-3 just before the interval. The ball started at the back, with Becky Maunder and Josie Copp passing out of defence to Curly, she found Titch who hammered the shot from the edge of the box into the back of the net.

Cheltenham came out quickly in the second half, and with the advantage of the slope, defending was the name of the game for Cully. Three Cully substitutions followed, allowing the Gaffer to put on fresh legs, and giving others a rest from the heat. Jamie Schofield was immediately in the action winning a contested header in midfield, and Kim Betlam had boundless energy on the right providing some testing crosses. Unfortunately Cully didn't add to their tally, however Josie tested their keeper from a free kick, and Goughy hit the frame of the goal with a cross come shot.

Good midfield and defensive play ensured Cheltenham were prevented from getting back into the game, with Cully determined to keep a clean sheet.

Cullomptons highlight in the second half was a magnificent piece of play from Max 'Psycho' Coupe. Despite 4 Cheltenham players being off side, the Ref allowed play to continue. With two players well clear of the nearest defender they tried to play it between themselves before a shot on goal. Max spoilt the opportunity for consolation, nipping in and scooping the ball from their feet.

A positive result for Cullompton, who are again on their travels next week. They play Yeovil, away, on Sunday 17th Sept, kick off 2pm.
