Cully secured another win with an impressive 6-0 win away to Bristol Uni. With availability and illness Gaffer travelled away with a bare 11. The mood was sombre as players were told a fellow friend and football colleague had passed away that morning having battled bravely for so long with cancer. Our condolences go to her family.
The girls responded in the best possible way, and urged by the gaffer to play for Lisa they displayed impressive football from the first whistle. With Rach and Jess on the wings the play stretched the Uni defence and there were several early shots on goal to test the keeper. The first goal was a Curly special, one of her tradesmark strikes from 30 yards that left the keeper rooted to the spot. Lola soon made it 2-0 with her first goal of the afternoon. Her speed and skill caused the Uni defence constant problems and she linked up well with Jess on the left and finished with a left footed shot across the keeper.
Curly and Redders dominated the midfield in the early exchanges and the back four were rarely tested. Lola made it 3-0 this time latching on to a pass from Flo. Her strike partner side footed a pass through to Lola who this time used her right foot and finished clinically. Redders had several shots but her efforts were either just wide or well saved by the keeper. Lola almost finished the half with a traditional hat trick, with a left and right goal the header was next but her effort went inches wide of the post. The Uni team came out and battled well early on in the second half with the wind behind them Bucky and Sam were tested in defence. They made no mistakes and the full backs supported well and turned defence into attack down the wings. Jess switched sides in the second half and her skill saw her beat the Uni players and create chance after chance. On one such move she carried the ball down the right, passed to Curly inside whose first touch in the box found Lola who knocked it past the keeper for her hat-trick. Again the Uni girls fought back and the wind advantage saw several balls played over the top. The defence and Max were alert to it though and cleared the danger. Rachel set up Lola for her 4th, this time she made no mistake with her header. A pinpoint cross from Rachel on the left was met by Lola on the run who directed the ball into the corner. The Uni then had a good 5 minute spell when they had a chance from a corner but a last ditch tackle from Emma Jones prevented Max making a save. Lola quite fittingly had the last say of the game and her 5th goal was sheer class. Holding off her defneder on the edge of the box she turned and struck a right footed curling shot into the top of the net. The player of the match award was most definitely deserved.
