Cully continue unbeaten run

15th March 2009

Cully secured another 3 points and kept a clean sheet as they scored 4 goals against Bristol Uni at Speeds Meadow. It was an excellent second half performance that won them the game as all four goals came in that half. Cully kept the same 3-5-2 formation that has served them well in recent weeks but with Emma Jones coming in for the unavailable Kerry Powell-Tuckett in defence.

Mingo returned to the side and Max remained in goal. Josie partnered top goalscorer Lola up front. Cully started brightly and the pace and skill of Lola caused the visitors defence to react quickly. It was her strike partner Josie Copp who had the first clear cut chance and had a one on one with the keeper. As she tried to round the keeper she stretched out her left hand to make a timely interception, taking the ball from Josies right foot. Not long after the keeper made another outstanding save, this time from Lola who was odds-on to add to her tally for the season. Cully attacked well using the speed and width of their wingers, Rachel Javan and Celine Le Boyer. Rachel had a shout for a penalty as she was up-ended in the box, but the ref played advantage as Cully had the ball. Curly had the final chance of the first hald and was denied by another outstanding save by the Bristol keeper. Curly looked set to score direct from a corner as she curled the ball in with her right foot, but the keeper got her fingertips to it and the ball rebounded off the cross bar to safety.

Cully started the second half determined to get the goal early on that would settle them down. It did arrive but was harshly ruled out for offside when most players thought that the player who was in an offside position had played no active part and Lola's right foot finish should have given Cully the lead. Spurred on by this decision the players set out to score and put the Bristol defence under immense pressure. Curly and Jess were dominating the midfield and Lola Garcia Sanchez and Josie Copp, fed by the midfield, were determined to score. It was Curly and Lola linking up that got the home side their first goal. Lola worked hard and won the ball and attacked down the left, the keeper came out as she was set to shoot but unselfishly she crossed to Curly who knocked the ball into an open goal. This goal gave the girls the confidence they needed and they continued to attack with venom. Lola was attacking through the middle and on the edge of the box was about to shoot when she was up-ended by the Bristol striker who had tracked back. She was the last player and denied a clear goal scoring opportunity, therefore she received a red card. With the player advantage Cully never looked back and went on a goal scoring run. The defence, who had remained solid all game, had time and space and got involved in the second goal. Sam linked up with Josie who set Celine off for a run down the right wing. Celine crossed perfectly for Lola who slid in and finished clinically with her left foot. The third goal came soon after and it fell to Josie who deserved to score after coming close on several occasions. Lola was again provider with a cross from the left that was hammered into the goal by Josie with a left footed volley. The fourth and final goal was probably the best of the game with Celine capping off her player of the match performance with a wonder goal. Curly set her off on a run just past the half way line - she took it `round one defender and came in from the right into the box. She then composed herself and cooly side footed a shot sending the keeper the wrong way. Bristol battled well but with only 10 players were short of ideas and couldnt breach the Cully defence. A clean sheet would again be welcomed next week but Cully face a sterner test at home to Frome.
