Cully progressed to the 3rd round of the Pat Sowden Trophy with a convincing 0-10 victory over Taunton side, Bishops Lydiard. Despite not playing since the end of November the team gelled from the first whistle and played some entertaining football. Gaffer started with a 4-4-2 formation, Sam Bell partnering Josie Copp in the centre with Karen Buck (Bucky) and Kerry Powell-Tuckett as full-backs. Catherine Wright (Curly), Mandy Earle and Emma Redwood formed a midfield trio with Jess Hooper switching from left to right on the wing. Lola Garcia-Sanchez and Rachel Javan formed their usual striking partnership. Cully started brightly with the girls commanding the ball and playing neat football to feet. Lola was soon on the scoresheet with a cracking shot with her right foot. She added two more in the first half, the third was a goal that was started at the back and saw most of the team taking a touch. Emma Mingo started the move that eventually landed with Curly on the right wing who crossed perfectly for a Lola tap-in. Jess set up Redders for her goal which she clinically finished with her left foot and then returned the favour as she turned provider for Jess. Bishops Lydiard battled well but had few opportunities in a first half that was dominated by the visitors. Vicky Tindall had a shot but from distance and it was a comfortable save for Mingo. The Cully defence shut them out with stout defending and the full-backs Kerry and Bucky also had opportunities to join the attack and push goalwards. Bishops Lydiard came out fighting in the second half and kept Cully very quiet for the first 20 minutes. They battled and beat Cully to the ball on more occasions putting the midfield and defence under pressure. Mingo was on hand to save Cully and kept a clean sheet when she saved from a one-on-one with Tindall. Gaffer made a triple substitution getting some fresh legs onto the pitch. Josie, Jess and Mandy made way for Emma Jones, Celine Le Boyer and Flo Greensit. Lola unsurprisingly opened up the scoring mid-way through the second half as Cully settled back into their game. A through ball from Curly saw Lola cooly finish. Rachel then got on the scoresheet with an emphatic penalty that she won as she was dragged down in the box. The keeper stood no chance as she rifled into the roof of the net. Celine played a bit part in Lola's 5th goal as she rounded the defender and unselfishly crossed for Lola who swept the ball in with her left foot. Rach rounded off the scoring with her second. Played through defence with a ball from Kerry she buried the ball into the bottom corner. Bishops Lydiard battled to the end and were by no means disheartened by the score to their credit. A good performance by the girls ahead of next weeks tough county cup game away to Alphington.
